The only way to completely eliminate the risk of syphilis is to avoid vaginal, anal, and oral sex. However, there are other options to reduce the risk.
- Always use correctly fitted latex condoms. However, if the condom does not cover a syphilis chancre, transmission can still occur.
- Stay in a monogamous relationship with a partner who has tested negative for syphilis.
- Get tested regularly for syphilis if you are concerned about possible exposure. Treatment is simple and effective, particularly in the early stages of the disease.
