Females: 5-30% show symptoms, which can include:
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Endocervical bleeding
- Painful and more frequent urination

Males: ~10% show symptoms, which can include:
- Urethral discharge
- Painful urination
- Testicular pain

Infections of the rectum can cause rectal pain, discharge, and bleeding.

Chlamydial conjunctivitis can cause irritation, pain, swelling and discharge, usually affecting one eye only. 

Females: ~20% show symptoms, which can include:
- Painful urination
- Abnormal vaginal discharge
- Endocervical bleeding

Males: 85-90% show symptoms, which can include:
- Painful and more frequent urination
- Abnormal urethral discharges

Acute infection is when HIV is most infectious but many people do not show any symptoms or only mild symptoms (e.g. headache, sore throat, fatigue). As the viral load increases, other symptoms appear, including:

- Mouth ulcers
- Muscle aches
- Persistent coughing
